5 Ways Seeds Is Different from Other Programs
Seeds is not like a regular classroom. Think back to the last school you were in.
Small desks. Uncomfortable chairs. A chalkboard or dry erase board. And of course, don’t forget a single teacher at the front of the room. Maybe you liked the teacher — but probably didn’t — and more importantly, the teacher may not have liked you. Maybe the teacher went too fast and you couldn’t keep up. Maybe you weren’t alert first thing in the morning. Maybe others in class distracted you.
With memories like that, it’s no wonder adults are hesitant to return to finish school. That’s why Seeds offers a completely different way for adults to earn their high school equivalency (GED, TASC, or HiSET). Here are 5 ways Seeds is unlike other adult literacy programs.
1) Seeds is FREE for students.
Coursework, practice tests, tutors, and supplies are all provided at no cost.
2) Even though Seeds calls it class, it’s really tutoring time.
Classes at Seeds are not like other classes. There is no teacher at the front of the room who teaches everyone the same thing at the same time. Instead, each student does work at their own skill level and at their own speed. Tutors work one-to-one with students at large round tables — forget tiny desks.
Seeds offers 2-hour classes (tutoring times), 3 times a day, 4 days a week, year-round. That’s more than any other adult ed program! Students can come as often as they like, Monday through Thursday. Tutoring times are:
- Morning 9am-11am
- Afternoon 1pm – 3pm
- Evening 6pm – 8pm
3) Seeds does NOT have an attendance policy.
The reason is simple. Adults have commitments — work, kids, running a household, just to name a few. Adults also have challenges — transportation, legal, medical, and emotional — that prevent them from coming to class. Seeds understands that life gets in the way of even the most dedicated students.
Students can come as often as they like, at whatever time works best. Flexibility isn’t limited to what days students attend. They can also mix and match what time they attend. Some students stay for the entire day.
4) There is no homework and novels are free.
Classwork stays at Seeds so that staff and tutors can review a student’s progress, and nothing is lost. This means there’s no homework. Students who wish to study outside of class are encouraged to practice computer skills or read one of the many free popular novels available for the taking.
5) There is no set end date.
The needs of every adult learner vary, so Seeds is not a 6 or 9-week program — the program is ONGOING. Most students need at least a few months of tutoring help before taking their HSE tests, but it’s not uncommon for students to be at Seeds for a year, sometimes more. But that’s ok, because unlike other programs with set start and end dates, students at Seeds don’t have the added pressure of learning everything in a set time frame.
No matter what time a year students completes their HSE, they are invited to participate in the annual graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievement.
With two locations, students from both East and West of the Cuyahoga River can benefit from the program. Both locations are along major bus routes, with secured parking lots. Seeds West is located in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood, while Seeds East is in Cleveland’s Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.
