Seeds of Literacy Offers Service Learning Opportunity for College Students

When you volunteer as a GED Tutor at Seeds of Literacy, you can earn service learning credits AND build your resume with volunteer experience. We know what you’re thinking….

What’s in it for me?

Here’s the deal: not only is this a great boost to your resume, but as a tutor at Seeds of Literacy, you’ll see firsthand how you’re making a difference in someone’s life.

You’ll help bridge the educational gaps while picking up valuable skills in community, leadership, social services, and problem-solving.

You’ll also gain experience working with people from all walks of life and different generations — something that will set you apart in today’s job market!

I don’t have transportation.

Many of our adult GED students face the same challenge. Our Virtual Classroom uses Zoom, allowing you to tutor from anywhere — even your dorm!

I really don’t have time. I have my own classes…

We totally get it! But a tutoring session is just 2 hoursthat’s only 1% of your entire week! We offer sessions 3 times a day, Monday through Thursday so you can pick the times that fit your schedule, even if it changes every week. You can tutor as often as you like, with total flexibility!

Yeah, but I’m not going into the education field.

No worries. You don’t have to be an education major. If you have a genuine desire to help others, we’ve got you covered with training and ongoing support. As long as you have a high school diploma, you can make a huge difference in the lives of others.

Plus, the skills you gain, like communication, empathy, and problem-solving, are useful no matter where you go in your career.

I’m sooooo not a “Math Person.”

If you aren’t comfortable tutoring math, that’s ok. You tutor only the subjects you want, at the levels in your comfort zone.

What’s the commitment?

Most service learning opportunities are only for a semester but we hope you’ll consider staying for an academic year. Remember, when your class schedule changes, you can switch up your Seeds schedule, too. That’s the beauty of our flexible program.

GIVE SOMEONE A REASON TO CELEBRATE!

We have options for that, too. We want to make your volunteer experience as easy as possible so we offer 3 types of training.

IN PERSON @ SEEDS WEST (Saturdays) or SEEDS EAST (Fridays): This training option is the most interactive. You’ll benefit from the questions of others, meet real students, and hear from current tutors. We’ll even feed you: breakfast AND lunch.

2-PART LIVE VIRTUAL TRAINING: Virtual Training using Zoom is an hour and a half on 2 consecutive Tuesday nights, with a learn-on-your-own assignment in between.

ASYNCHRONOUS WEB MODULES: We recorded a Virtual training and broke it down into short sections (less than 10 minutes each). You can start and stop at your leisure.

Note: This is our most popular option, but provides the least amount of information and no interaction with our students and tutors.
