10 “Star Wars” Tips for Earning Your GED®
Put down your blaster and hold your calls from Jabba (yes, we’re nerds). We’ve got 10 Star Wars inspired tips to make sure the force is with you on your way to a GED® credential.
1. “Don’t get cocky.” – Han Solo
Many people don’t know what the actual GED test looks like. It’s a pretty tough test, but there are ways to prepare, like taking GED prep classes.
Also, be realistic about your skills and be sure to take a GED practice test to make sure you’re ready before you take the actual GED test. Thinking you already know everything and signing up to take the test is easy. Pacing yourself and putting in the work to make sure you’re ready takes patience and persistence. (The Empire wasn’t defeated in a day, after all.)
2. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader
Have faith in yourself. Too many people learn about how tough the GED test is and get discouraged. But just because the GED test is tough doesn’t mean you can’t pass it. In fact, having confidence in yourself is one of the most important parts of taking the test. Few people can pass without it.
3. “In my experience, there’s no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi
Passing the GED test isn’t about getting lucky. You’ve got to study and get ready. Once you’ve got the skills, you’ll be able to pass the test with confidence in yourself, like a true Jedi master.
4. “Beep-boop-beep click-whistle!” – R2D2
We speak fluent droid, so let us translate: Staying consistent is important. If you don’t study often, you’ll have a lot of trouble getting ready for the test.
5. “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you’re my only hope.” – Princess Leia
We all need a little bit of help to accomplish our goals, whether it’s passing the GED or rebelling against the Empire. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people you know who can help you out. Everyone needs the help from time to time.
6.“It’s not impossible. We used to bullseye womprats back home, and they’re not much bigger than that.” – Luke Skywalker
Even though the odds of shooting down the Death Star seemed impossible, Luke knew that he had the ability to succeed. Adult learners aren’t facing the Empire, but sometimes the barrier standing in the way can feel like a full-on assault. Don’t get discouraged looking at the end goal. Remind yourself of the things you’ve already accomplished to give yourself an extra boost of confidence.
7. “Of course, he’s been known to be wrong…from time to time…” – C-3PO
We all make mistakes, and that’s okay. In fact, making mistakes is a part of learning. Don’t let your mistakes stop you.
8. “You’ve got a lot of guts coming here…” – Lando Calrissian
It takes a lot of courage to go back to school, and even more to go all the way to take the GED test. Be proud of the steps you’re taking!
9. “RAAAAAAAAAAAAAWR” – Chewbacca
Okay, we don’t speak Wookie, but we believe Chewie is obviously saying to be realistic about your goals and set practical steps and timelines to achieve them. (Wookies are big on time management.)
Don’t try to do everything all at once, or you’ll feel overwhelmed. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to remind yourself of what it is you’re working towards and break the goals into smaller steps.
10. “Pass on what you have learned.” – Yoda
Once you’ve got knowledge, it’s important to try and help others, too. It might mean you help a friend study, or even just let someone know that going back to classes for GED prep isn’t as scary as they might think.
