[NEWS] Seeds of Literacy Announces Residency Requirement for Virtual Classroom

Cleveland, OH – Seeds of Literacy, a leading provider of adult education services, has announced that it will limit enrollment in its Virtual Classroom to Ohio residents only, beginning May 1, 2024. This decision comes after a period of significant growth and popularity for the Virtual Classroom, which served as a vital resource for individuals facing various barriers to traditional education.

In a recent letter to stakeholders, President & CEO Bonnie Entler remarked, “It was gratifying to witness our impact extending to nearly every corner of the country. While this expanded reach was initially exhilarating, it has since prompted us to pause and reflect on the boundaries of our community.”

Numerous factors were considered including resource allocation, program sustainability, and, most importantly, the needs of the local community.

“The decision to restrict enrollment was driven by the overwhelming demand for the Virtual program, which exponentially outpaced volunteer resources, staffing capacity, and financial resources — the strain of which compromised our ability to deliver the level of support and quality instruction that our students both expect and deserve,” Entler continued.

For current out-of-state students and those who enroll prior to May 1, 2024, tutoring services will remain open provided they have (1) completed registration,(2) attended orientation, and (3) completed their initial TABE assessment before the May 1 deadline. Seeds will continue to support these students as long as they maintain active student status in the program.

Additionally, out-of-state tutors will still be welcomed to serve the existing and incoming student body in the Virtual Classroom, ensuring continued access to quality education for all. Even with the enrollment restriction for students, need for tutors is expected to rise.
